So what is the difference between friendship and relationship?

I posed this question to myself just over a week ago. I was affirming my support for a friend in this tough time.
So here goes... "Lee's Theory of Relationships and Friendship."
I think i'm going for a concentric rings model, with Strangers on the outside and relationships as the very centre (I reserve the right to add more to the centre at a later time [thinking marriage]). The first layer in from strangers is Acquaintances, and the defining charactistic is knowledge - I know you, you know me. Going to the next layer is Friends - spending time with them and respect. Next in is Close Friends, those that you dearly care for, feel the need to hold them close and support them in whatever they do. Trust is also a big thing at this level. The only thing left (which I can think of off-hand) is intimacy, which of course is for relationships.
Ok... that looks far too black and white... things are always a little fuzzy.
