LCA2006: Day 5 photos (and why they are late)

Posted 2006-01-27-2357

Uploading more than four 2MP photos to Gallery running on a P233mmx is not a good idea.

It's not good for two reasons. The first is that it times out, and becomes unreachable (web only). I think this is due to the slow resizing, and the memory usage (which is high). This poor little box is my firewall, and my webserver, and my mail server, and my bittorrent peer (but that's off while I'm away), and my ssh server, and my internal DNS, and my radvd server (I run ipv6 site local). It does rather a lot. Did I mention that it only has 64MB of ram? And 4GB of disk? And that the CPU fan hasn't turned over in a year? It is really on it's last legs. And as a student I can't afford to buy a new computer. I have a more powerful box that could be used (only a PII 333), but it's used to hold my parent's data backup and a few other things. No, not porn. Try an apt-proxy mirror and a CUPS server (which is surprisingly harddisk and memory intensive).

The second reason is that it decreasing my chance of winning a prize for photo blog, and making me stay up late.

In the time to write this, it has come back, with none of the new photos. Back I go to try again. If there are no photos, or no captions, or the album it's named, it wasn't me, it was my poor little server (or my flakey adsl but that's another story).
