Compression Competition: progress 1.
Posted 2006-08-17-0146
About three days ago now, there was an article on Slashdot about a compression competition. After looking at the website for the Hutter Compression competition and remembering my Text Comperssion honours level course, I thought I would give it a go.
I haven't done much so far, but I'm down about 2MB from straight Order 0 (about 62MB), and have set up most of the contexts I was aiming for. After finishing writing the parsing the wikipedia file, the next step will be the neat models which should hopefully gain some ground on Ollie who is down to 39MB already (Order 4, aparently).
I feel that writing compression algorithms is hard to debug, so I'm taking small steps. I have put up a graph of my (be it little) progress so far. I expect to put more up as I go along. If I fall silent for a long time, I'm either close, or am too busy to work on it.
