Cumulative update from March 2007 to March 2008

Posted 2008-03-23-1209

I have a quiet Easter Sunday to myself, and a much better way to write blog entries, so I guess I should update what has happened in the last year...

Thousand Parsec did take part in GSoC last year. I mentored a student who wrote a Ruleset for the game Reach for the Stars in tpserver-cpp. He did very well, and two of the other TP projects when well too.

The AI contest didn't happen as there was only one entry. Summer of Code brought us more new developers.

I finally handed in my Masters thesis in late April. Corrections were handed in in October, and I'm being awarded my Masters with Distinction in April. I've been working at Uni as a research assistant on a project since June.

My Grandma Begg passed away in October. The afternoon after the funeral I flew to America to take part in the Google Summer of Code Mentor Summit. That was stressful. The Mentor summit was cool, and there are pictures on Flickr of myself and the other four Kiwis that made the trip. Tim (mithro) also went.

I have been interviewing for Google. It was an interesting process. They flew me over to California (again) for an on-site interview. It was great to see more to Google, and the interviews when fairly well. They decided that my skills didn't fit with what they were after for that particular team. While I was over I was Ollie and picked up the wedding stuff we had arranged to have sent to him.

So where am I up to? Oh right...

Megan and I went to Melbourne for Linux.conf.au 2008. We also had a few days in Sydney, where we caught up with Megan's friends. The conference was good, and we met Leslie (lh) who is wonderful and cool. Also met Brett (nash) and his partner. We had a good TP development discussion one evening with nash, mithro and myself (and a few others who were there.)

Speaking of Thousand Parsec, we are in Google Summer of Code again! I'm looking forward to working with more people and seeing what cool things come out this year.

I think that is enough for now. I hope to get back into writing blog posts. Comments and encouragement by email please! I think the next one or two might be tpserver-cpp and libtpproto-cpp related.
