Toshiba Portege 3490CT
I now have one of these laptops. It's a nice little unit. I have installed Debian GNU/Linux on it using the usb-floppy install disks from here. 2.6.2 kernel runs fine, the ethernet on the docks are eepro100's (with different ether addresses). Haven't managed to get the DVD Rom drive going yet, any help would be welcome. ACPI works fine (for checking battery and temperature), but the toshiba kernel module and toshutils don't appear to do anything.
For sale
Nothing, at this time. Sorry.
OK! What Happened to my Cluster!?
I sold it, bit by bit before I even started using it. I think I'll be waiting for another no-reserve auction before I start rebuilding again. Mind you... I do have a bit more money now.
Network Naming
People have their own ways of naming the computers on their networks. Some are boring (host1, host2, etc), and some are quite funny (gonzo, beaker, etc).
My naming scheme can be traced back to a song. 'Better Days' by Tadpole was the insperation for it with (almost throw-away) lines like "I miss sleep, it's nice" and "I miss peace, it's nice". Can you see the pattern yet?
Anyway... I started with 3 computers, trust, peace, and music. I added a fourth called knowledge (know for short). Currently I have:
- trust (second computer to have this name)
- sleep
- music
- knowledge (currently dead and offline)
- respect (network printer)
- freedom (Laptop)
- hope
- peace (second computer to have the name)
Now can you spot the pattern? What have I missed (both accidentally and on purpose)? I have a few names in waiting but need some more computers.
Future plans
- Acquire some very large hdd (>160GB)
- Buy more matched groups of computers (and don't keep selling them) to build a cluster
- Charge people for using my cluster
- Get a decent link to the Net (>512Kb/s)
- Do web hosting, data warehousing, parallel processing/data mining, co-location
- Build IPv6 network - Done!
- More stuff i can't think of ATM
